Georgia On My Mind - solo guitar arrangement
This is sort of a retrospective arrangement for me. It's mostly the same as the version I released about 3 years ago, which was my third arrangement ever (basically - I had made little arrangements for cocktail hours or wedding ceremony things, but not the same vibe at all). I was taking lessons with @leftygtrguy Frank Potenza who really helped guide me in this skill...which makes sense since he is a Joe Pass protégé. The previous version was played on my Silver Sky (basically a strat), and I was lucky enough to have it viewed during a Julian Lage masterclass livestream. I wanted to re-record this arrangement for a couple reasons: 1. to put it on an upcoming album and 2. to see how far I've come in this style. Whether it be tone, chord/single-note-line technique, or fluidity, I was curious to hear any changes in my playing 3 years - and however many arrangements - later.

Sweep picking is not my speciality so it's quite a challenge for me when a piece is made up of a ton of it, haha. I'm still trying to get out of my comfort zone with some more classical pieces and thought I would share, warts and all. So far I'm loving Barrios' work. A lot of guitarists I looked up to would always talk about learning Bach or Paganini or something, and while I like those compose...

I forget where I first heard this tune actually, but the guitarists I've heard cover it have blown me away. From Chet Atkins and Lenny Breau to Wes Montgomery to the Tim Lerch version, it's really fun to see the same blueprint built a different way each time. I decided to add some effects after learning the lyrics, as they seemed so uniquely "of their time". Lyrics can often be reinterpreted as...

I may have this guitar for under a month, so I thought it would be nice to make an arrangement with it! Pickup is a Lollar Blonde neck pickup. This is technically an "alternate take" from an album I just started working on :) Hope you enjoy! 🎶 Listen on Spotify open.spotify.com/artist/6JYq9hAU7KpfPcWmr18n8Q?si=7brvyO42Se6WA1i7xxhniA open.spotify.com/artist/3OY0QuNeFkqHMp7RKLZp2l?si=lOdEg52PRhO3...

Suhr Thornbuckers Make This PRS Come ALIVE!
Absolutely beautiful. Love the moment at 0:22 when the bassline starts slinking around, and that slooooooow bend at 1:30 -- thrilling stuff! :D
Thanks I appreciate it!
This is a wonderful arrangement and performance. The tone is so full and dark without sounding muddy at all. I like dis!
Thanks Ben! There was definitely a good amount of EQing haha
Absolutely gorgeous playing. Wonderful.
Appreciate it!
Sounds amazing! ❤ Song name?
Arabescos :)
❤
Elliot, which pickup did you put in the SS bridge position?
A Fralin hot split blade, highly recommended!
how I can get this preset?
Its over on the fractal forum :) or you can dm me your email on instagram
so clean
what neck pickup is that? I think I've seen it before. I am not sure if it is a zexcoil noiseless.
Its a Fralin Vintage Split Blade, a great pickup!
Nice
Yes it does sound amazing! I got a new guitar role model!!!!
Thats so nice of you thank you!
@@ElliottKleinguitar is the tab for that in your patreon?
You can dm me on there or instagram and I will send them!
Sounds amazing!
Appreciate it!
Ha ha ha….DOOOOOD!…..yup…me too on the “thinkin I needed a pedal” thing…been runnin clean amp pedalboard setup for YEARS!….just couldn’t shake it for WAY too long…feel like an idiot, but finally coming around
Would love to hear as the title track to an epic rpg
What song is this
the intro to my arrangement of a tune :)
Radiohead
I can already hear Tom Yorke's rising sustained vocals in the back
2x speed sounds clean
I’ve been on the same search for the best “strat-iest” sounding guitar. Really went down the rabbit trail awhile back. My journey and this video I think the PRS SS sounds the most Strat-y which is what I want Great video. The Suhr just sounds so strong and robust etc.
@@Joshuaalan21 its certainly a great guitar! Hope you get to enjoy one soon!
@@ElliottKleinguitar Thank you! I actually ended up picking one up awhile back. It’s been my main guitar for years now. No regrets. I’ve been thinking of picking up a Suhr lately and I’m just not sure if it’s worth it for me since I already have the SS.
@@Joshuaalan21 A Suhr is definitely another animal for sure. I may suggest a Nash (10" radius) that comes with Lollars as it may be a closer aesthetic to the SS. A Suhr would be a great choice but certainly more of a modern vibe
I use the MXR 10 Band EQ Pedal, and I can make my different pickups sound and shape the tone to what I exactly like.
Nice! I always see an EQ pedal especially on Nashville studio players boards
I stopped watching as soon as you said the EJ has swapped pickups. Once you swap the pups, it's a different guitar, period, so the title is misleading. I was interested in the comparison because I have two EJ strats, but with the original pups. All I know is that it is as strat-like as you can get - and noisy as hell to go along with that.
Well, maybe just listen instead
@@ElliottKleinguitar Yeah, my point is, when I saw the title, I thought, "oh good, I can see how my some of these strat alternatives compare with my EJ strats. But that purpose evaporated when I learned yours is a modded EJ strat (pups nonetheless). If you put "modded EJ Strat" in the title, it would have been accurate and at least I wouldn't have been duped in. That's my only gripe.
@@BigDancin I would hardly call it "duped in" as I mention the modding in the video. Because you have EJ strats you could even extend the comparison and see how the EJ strats you have compare with some hot noiseless ones, as well as the PRS and Suhr.
Nice video man! Really good sounds coming out of that guitar, and I dig the finish too :) Can I ask if you've ever played a Maybach Tele, and how you think it stacks up against the Haar? Thank you
I only have played a few in-store, and they were not set up. If I recall they were maybe a bit closer to a Fender feel with the maple neck, but the finish on them is really pretty. I liked the worn neck of the Haar, reminds me of Fender CS or Nash
@@ElliottKleinguitar thanks for the reply! I think the only thing I can do then is try to find both to play test them. I can find some UK dealers with Maybach, but none with Haar though unfortunately 😕
@@scaredypicker time to make your way over to NL!

Thank you for arranging recording and sharing this
Well thanks for listening and commenting!
Beautiful!!!
Thanks!
Very nice chime chords in the end there, a wonderful arrangement :D Do you have any tips or strategies on how to approach arranging a song like that for solo guitar? When I try it, it I get stuck at the melody with the bassnote and maybe the next most obvious chord tone, or It just sounds like block chords with the melody on top. Do I just need to learn more chords and get more familiar with the fretboard in order to bring out some inner voices?
I would suggest lessons with me :) But also: chords and bass note is a good place to start but it sounds more like you could make lists of how the arrangements you enjoy are arranged. Is there inner movement in the chords? Do you like arrangements with open strings ala Chet Atkins or Bill Frisell or the opposite? Also, can you comp the chords in a way you find exciting? For me it’s a case of listening to many versions and finding inspiration, combined with my particular comfort zones (more bluesy/americana vibes than true jazzbox vibes)
@@ElliottKleinguitar Lessons would be great, and as soon as my financial situation improves next year I will shoot you a message :D I actually already have a teacher at a music school near me, but they are on summer break. Also, with him Im focusing on my soloing and comping, in order to prepare for joining a jam session. The arrangements I enjoy listening to and learning most are from Ted Greene, Tim Lerch and Julian Lage. My comping is still kind of basic I guess, I mostly rely on shell chords, rooted on the 5th or 6th string and not much more, so harmony wise there is still some work to do, but rhythm wise Im ok. I played the drums before and try to translate some of that.
Ah ok, in that case I may suggest starting with bass and melody note when making solo arrangements, but then using inversions and walking bass. I think that mixture will give a good amount to practice next :)
Way cool. Ya can't go wrong with a Jimmy Van Heusen tune.
Do you have a favorite?
@@ElliottKleinguitar I actually like your version of this, Lenny and Chet, Peter Mazza's (which I'm not sure if it's recorded, but I take lessons from him), and I kinda like my own, if that's not too obnoxious....... as far as other Van Heusen songs, I'm partial to "I Thought About You."
Oh I don’t know Peter, I’ll have to check out his playing, thanks for the suggestion! Also thanks for listening :)
@@ElliottKleinguitar It was my pleasure. Your playing is very enjoyable and thought-provoking.
Fender
Hi Elliot, could you share detailed specs. I´m trying to get one but looks difficult find all the real specks (at least on internet). I´m assuming the neck radius is 9.5¨ or 10¨but not sure. Also the tickness at 1st fret and at 12th fret is unknown for me. Thanks in advance!!
I havent even seen the thickness measurements for Haars anywhere unfortunately, but all the necks are medium-thick C shapes (that Ive played). The radii are usually compound and either 7.25-9.5, 8.5-10.5 or 9-11 compound like mine. Gregsguitars usually has a photo of the spec sheet that gets shipped with the guitar. Hope that helps!
If you play great, cheap guitars will looks like custom shop
I wish that were totally true but there’s a definite limit to that
that is not funk. it is actually anti-funk.
i'm surprised to hear Catedral on electric, but it works! nice job
thanks for listening!
I'm planning to replace the prs s2 McCarty pickup with a thornbucker. Which 50mm or 53mm is better for the bridge?
I think 50mm since you're closer to Gibson scale length than Fender
I was never a strat guy until I finally got it through my thick skull that the tone doesn’t have to always be at 10! I tend to live between 3-5 on my strat and love it! I also wired mine to have 1 volume and 1 tone so I no longer have the stock strat volume knob getting in my way.
What sort of music do you play and what’s your amp/pedal/modeler etc setup?
I have a Randall rg50 tube amp that I use as a cab for my pod hd. I mostly use the deluxe reverb model with a tube screamer or tube drive. I like a variety of music.
Misty is such a beautiful piece
Right?
No, those subtle notes are the ones that make it magic 🔥
❤️❤️
Waw
Whelp, I liked mine but now I think I might give it a rework 😅 phenomenal!
Im sure Julian Lage has a version somewhere that bends time and space that we can all drool over
But also, thanks!
@@ElliottKleinguitar hear hear, Julian Lage is amazing
Man, that's a well-loved guitar and she's making some beautiful sounds.
Love the way this one sounds for sure!
The worn down fret board is mwah🥵
Plays even better than it looks!
@ElliottKleinguitar Yeah, it sounded great my dude.
I own a 2019 Trad T in Sonic Blue, heavy relic, with rosewood fretboard, birdseye maple neck and Amber pickups. I had to rework the shielding first, but the sound and playability are amazing! A truly great guitar!
Ah nice, glad you love it too!
One of my favorite songs, both Mathis' and Stevens' renditions. Great to hear the melody in such clean solo guitar!
Thanks for listening!

so nice!! what a great video!
Thanks for watching!
That is pretty insane. 😮
You should check out the bonafide classical players versions, super crazy!
Dude, you tested 3 COMPLETELY different guitars, and you're talking about difference in tone based on the scale?!?! hahahahah
👍🏼
It would be nice to see the chods drawn out on a diagram too instead of just showing the guitar
Great topic video, on my own experience there si a BIg difference about the scale lenght and the tone and playability. I have 3 fender guitars, stratocaster and telecaster 25.5" scale and I have Duo sonic 2022 that is 24" scale, they feel very different when playing, specially when you are playing Rhythm songs, the short scale requiers to be more carefully on the strengh of the strumming, when you are playing lead songs, the shorter scale es more esay with the bendings and easy to move around the freatboard..... im planing to get a Fender powercaster in order to have a 24.75" scale guitar....or maybe I will get a Cyclone squier
